Why are so many coupons showing up as being used in Magento?

If you see a lot of coupon codes marked as used that haven't actually been used. Here is an example:

The reason is that when coupon code auto expiration is used, coupons have to be marked as used when they are expired. That's the only way in Magento for individual coupon codes to be expired.
